From Apprentice to Impact: How Hands-On Training Drives Real Results
At Four Star Freightliner, we believe the best way to learn is by doing, and doing meaningful work that truly matters. That belief was on full display at our Midway, Florida location, where apprentice Taylor Brown recently took the lead on an important repair for the City of Tallahassee.
The City of Tallahassee brought in a fire truck experiencing multiple oil leaks. The challenge? The exact source of the leaks couldn’t be identified. This wasn’t a routine fix. It required careful diagnostics, mechanical knowledge, and attention to detail.
Under the guidance of his mentor and trainer, Troy Scott, Taylor stepped into a leading role on the project. Together, they diagnosed the issue and completed the necessary repairs, including replacing the front gear cover and seals to resolve the leaks.
The result: a fully operational fire truck, ready to get back to serving the community.
Taylor’s success highlights what makes our apprentice program unique. Our apprentices don’t just observe. They actively participate in real repairs that make a difference. From day one, they gain:
- Hands-on experience with real equipment
- Exposure to complex diagnostic challenges
- The confidence that comes from doing the work themselves
And they’re never alone.
Every apprentice at Four Star Freightliner is paired with an experienced technician who provides guidance, oversight, and support. For Taylor, that mentorship came from Troy Scott, ensuring the job was completed to the highest standard while also creating a valuable learning experience.
This combination of real responsibility + expert mentorship is what prepares our apprentices for long-term success in the diesel industry.
The skilled trades are essential and programs like ours are helping build the next generation of diesel technicians through practical, hands-on learning.
Taylor’s work is a perfect example of what’s possible when opportunity meets preparation.
Great job to Taylor Brown and Troy Scott for a job well done, and for keeping critical vehicles safely on the road.
