Forty-three students from Wakulla High School recently visited the Four Star Freightliner dealership in Midway, Florida, for a hands-on field trip designed to introduce students to careers in the trucking and diesel technology industries. The visit was coordinated by Johnathon Slusher from Wakulla High School in Crawfordville, Florida, who reached out to the Four Star Freightliner team to arrange the educational experience.

During the tour, students explored multiple departments within the dealership to see how a commercial truck dealership operates day-to-day. Students were guided through the facility and heard directly from several Four Star team members, including:

  • Zack Howard, Truck Account Manager
  • Jamie Hargrove, Parts Manager
  • John Whitaker, Shop Foreman
  • Mike Ellifritz, Regional Director

The group also toured the service shop, viewed the dealership’s back lot, and took a closer look at several new trucks. Students were given a step-by-step overview of the dealership’s operations, helping them understand how sales, parts, service, and management work together to support customers and keep fleets running efficiently.

Introducing Students to Diesel Technician Careers

A major focus of the visit was educating students about potential careers in the trucking and diesel service industries. Students received informational handouts that included discussion about the Four Star Freightliner Apprentice Program, which provides hands-on training for individuals interested in becoming diesel technicians.

Two apprentices currently in the program were highlighted: Jason Alexander and Taylor Brown. According to the visiting teacher, students were highly engaged during the tour and asked numerous questions about the industry.

Strong Student Interest in the Diesel Industry

The field trip sparked significant interest among the students.

By the end of the visit:

  • Six students expressed serious interest in pursuing careers in the diesel field
  • Four students specifically asked how to apply at Four Star Freightliner
  • Several students asked about joining the company’s apprentice program

Supporting Workforce Development in the Trucking Industry

The visit also included participation from Scott Coleson, Vice President of Finance, and David Carroll, Training Director, who helped explain the wide range of career opportunities available within the trucking and transportation industry.

Programs like this field trip play an important role in helping high school students explore career options and understand the growing demand for skilled technicians.
