Beyond the Stars: Angie Flowers, Parts Counter Salesperson

Jun. 23 2023 Latest By Four Star Freightliner

Many Four Star Freightliner customers at the Montgomery, Ala. location are greeted by Angie Flowers when they come to buy parts for their trucks. She's been a parts counter salesperson there since April 2022. But it's what she does after work that people are surprised to learn.

Angie, also known as LuLu, has been a DJ for 20 years. It all started when she used to sing karaoke and the DJ complimented her on being such a great entertainer. He encouraged her to try DJ'ing. He showed her how to use the equipment and LuLu took it from there.

She recalled her first karaoke/DJ'ing job being in Millbrook, Ala. She said lots of people showed up because they heard LuLu was doing her first karaoke gig. It was a packed house.

"I like the interaction with people", LuLu said. "It's not about the money. It's totally about getting to meet new people all the time."

LuLu is the life of the party. Just ask her co-workers who attended the annual employee celebration in 2022. Lucky for LuLu and the other guests, the party featured karaoke. It didn't take long before she was called to the stage and given the microphone. LuLu performed Vanilla Ice's 1990 hit song "Ice, Ice Baby". And she didn't miss a beat.

While LuLu enjoys karaoke and DJ'ing big events, she said she would rather do charity events and birthday parties for her family.

"My family is my everything," she said. "And being an aunt is the best thing I've ever done in my life."

She says her nieces and nephews love to see her in action. They proudly point out "that's my aunt".

"I guarantee I'll be doing my niece's Sweet 16 party later this year," LuLu said with a big smile on her face. "By the end of the night, I'll have 50 kids calling me Aunt Angie."

LuLu's family obviously brings her joy. But it's her desire to give back to her community that makes her different from many other entertainers.

She has worked with numerous charitable organization to provide services at their fundraising events. Recently, the High Cotton chapter of the Leather and Lace Motorcycle Club organized a charity event at One More on the River in Millbrook. It was for Magic Moments, a non-profit that grants "magic moments" for Alabama children with chronic life-threatening or severe life-altering medical conditions. LuLu was the DJ and the emcee. Although the intention was to raise enough money for one child's magic moment, they raised enough for three!

"I'm blessed and I want to give back to the community so that they can also be blessed as much as I've been in my life," said LuLu.

And if you're wondering how Angie got the name Lulu, it came from a friend she refers to as "Biscuit" back when Angie was 21-years-old. It was a shortened version of her high school nickname "Gelute".

"Some people don't even know my real name", she said. "They always call me LuLu."
